Description:
OBJECTIVE OF THE COURSE:
To familiarise student with the basics of scientific methods and research, scientific and professional communication, and the basic principles of scientific ethics. Student will acquire fundamental knowledge and develop some of the practical skills required for successful scholarly research, writing assessment papers, and research and professional publications. To familiarise student with the elements of successful communication through lectures and practical application, such as: presentation of one's research or professional work in the form of posters and oral presentations to colleagues, general communication with the public and popularization of science and profession.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After passing the exam from the course Introduction to scientific research and communications, the students are able to:
1 describe and apply the basic principles of the scientific method,
2 describe and apply the principles of scientific ethics,
3 describe the stages of scientific research,
4 independently research literature in scientific databases,
5 analyse scientific articles and other literature,
6 to plan and design their own scientific research and professional activities,
7 to write a summary of a scientific paper and a seminar paper,
8 create a poster and a short oral presentation with a presentation,
9 describe and apply the principles of successful communication with colleagues and the public, and popularization of science and profession.

COURSE CONTENT:
Geophysics and its branches/disciplines. Scientific method: hypothesis, theory, scientific research work. Scientific research: principles, ethics, phases, project. Publishing of the results of scientific research: the type, structure and drafting of a research paper, citing and referencing. Scientific databases and journals: search, bibliometrics, evaluation, analysis. Professional papers and studies. Theses: final, diploma (master) and doctoral thesis. Scientific communication: oral presentations and posters. Use of language and graphics in presenting scientific and/or professional work and its results. Communication with the public and popularization of science. A career in science.

TEACHING METHODS:
Presentation, discussion, practical work on the computer with various tools, and group work. Use of the Merlin/Moodle system for e-learning.

METHOD OF MONITORING AND VERIFICATION:
Regular participation in courses, quizzes. Successfully completed homework in the form of a written report (seminar paper), a short oral presentation and a poster. An oral exam.

TERMS FOR RECEIVING THE SIGNATURE:
The first two homework have to be positively graded and the third homework submitted. Attendance at least 70% at exercises.

EXAMINATION METHODS:
The overall grade for the course is the weighted average of the grades for the homework (50 %) and the oral exam (50 %).
