About the station

The Bakar tide-gauge station is the oldest Croatian station, founded in December 1929 by the Geophysical Institute (Zagreb). The station was in operation until the beginning of the Second World War. It was reestablished in 1949 and is still in operation. The station is equipped with an analogue float-type instrument installed above a stilling well in the Custom Office (town of Bakar city). The well is connected to the sea via a connecting pipe. The station was modernised in the early 2000s when digital sensors were installed, along with GPRS modems for real / near-real time data collection. A digital float-type sensor was installed in October 2003 (OTT Thalimedes) alongside the analogue instrument. The radar sensor (OTT Kalesto) was installed in open air (~300 m south-east of the well) in September 2004. The digital instruments measure 1-minute average sea level values and transmit them to the Geophysical Department with a latency of 15 minutes. Air pressure is also measured (1-minute averages). The analogue data is digitised (hourly resolution) and processed once a year. All instruments measure the sea level relative to the same reference level. The analogue instrument is considered the main instrument, while the other two instruments measure high-frequency oscillations and serve as backup. The station is leveled to the national geodetic network via bench marks BV15663 and A510.

The Bakar sea level time series is over 90 years long, making it the longest series of an oceanographic parameter measured in Croatia. Due to its length and quality, the Bakar sea level has been used in studies of different processes (e.g., mean sea level, seasonal cycle, sea level response to planetary forcing, storm surges, the basin-wide and bay seiches and tides).
