COURSE GOALS: To introduce students to modern experimental physics, including various aspects of experimental setups (noise, frequency analysis), type of sensors for temperature, pressure, light, magnetic field; methods of minimizing unwanted noise. Furthermore, student will be acquainted with scientific literature, publishing and modern scientific database searching.

LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
By finishing this course, student will:
- know how to follow and search contemporary scientific literature
- be able to demonstrate knowledge about various influences on experimental setup
- be able to demonstrate knowledge about Fourier analysis and its application to measured data
- be able to qualitatively describe modern sensors for temperature, magnetic field, pressure, light
- know several methods for elimination of unwanted signal (modulation, lock-in amp ...)
- be able to qualitatively describe several methods of sample preparation
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
1. Scientific literature (UDC, types of publications, contemporary research, web interfaces to databases, scientiometric).
2. Design of experimental setup (general/ethical, (un)wanted signals and its elimination, Fourier analysis).
3. Various typical experimental instrumentation (computer data acquisition, various transducers)
4. Selected experimental techniques (single filtering, modulation, lock-in amplifier, AFM, sputtering, PLD)
REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:
Complex analysis, differential and integral analysis.
GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS:
The final exam consists of oral examination of selected experiment-based scientific paper. Student should thoroughly understand physics and experimental methods discussed in paper.
