Description:
COURSE CONTENT:Carbon and organic chemistry.
Chemical bonds and electronic structure of organic molecules.
Alkanes. Composition, constitution and configuration.
Functional groups.
Alkenes and alkynes. Addition reactions. Aromatic hydrocarbons.
Radical substitutions. Nucleophilic substitutions and elimination reactions.
Alcohols, thiols and ethers. Amines.
Aldehydes and ketones. Nucleophilic addition on the unsaturated carbon.
Carboxylic acids, acidity, inductive and resonance effect.
Chirality.
Derivatives of carboxylic acids. Nucleophilic substitution on the unsaturated carbon.
Aminoacids, peptides and proteins.
Carbohydrates.
Lipids.

COURSE OUTCOME:

It is expected that students will be able to:
- classify organic compounds according to functional groups
- name compounds on the basis of structural formula and predict structural formula from the name of the comound
- differentiate and explain different types of isomerism
- list and compare the major types of organic reactions
- analyze the reactivity of organic compounds on the basis of their structure
- differentiate and compare reaction mechanisms of substitution, addition and elimination
- list the most important natural organic compounds and their major characteristics
