Description:

Introduction: short survey of the separation methods in analytical chemistry. Extraction in chemical analysis. Factors influencing the efficacy of extraction (type of solvent, type and concentration of reagent, ionic strength, acidity, multiple extraction, selectivity, synergistic effects, etc.). Quantitative aspects of extraction (distribution coefficient, percentage extraction). Extraction of metal ions, neutral chelates, ionic pairs. Types: solvent extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, solid phase extraction, micro extraction. Advantages of the extraction methods over other separation methods. Industrial application of extraction techniques.
The course content to be supplemented with up-to-date scientific achievements in the field.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- select and apply an appropriate separation procedure
- appreciate the advantages and limitations of a given extraction procedure
- elaborat the optimization of the extraction method
- define the quantitative aspects of extraction (distribution coefficient, efficiency of extraction)
- define factors affecting extraction (type of solvent, ionic strength, multiple extraction, selectivity, etc.)
- select a procedure adequate for the extraction of a given compound
- understand the basis and application of various extraction methods such as liquid-liquid extraction, Soxhlet, accelerated solvent extraction, microwave- and ultrasound-assisted extraction, supercritical fluid extraction, solid phase extraction/micro-extraction and surfactant/polymer-mediated extraction
- apply the acquired knowledge to resolve common problems of separation procedures
