COURSE GOALS: Acquire basic knowledge about the historical development of architecture. Become aware of a student for consideration of construction work and determination within a particular historical period and contemporary contexts. Throughout the history of architecture, with functional and design solutions, focus on the study of building materials, construction and construction technology. Train students to establish criteria to evaluate architectural works using critical analysis.

LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
Upon passing the course on Introduction into Civil Engineering, the student will be able to:
1. appoint styles and explain the features of the different stylistic eras,
2. specify the importance and characteristics of the main representatives of historical styles,
3. identify and explain examples of architecture individual styles,
4. explain the materials, design and construction technology through history,
5. observe, notice important and analyze architectural works,
6. connect the knowledge of historical styles and compare periods.

3. Egyptian architecture - the cemetery, temples, cities
4. Architecture and cities of Mesopotamia
5. American civilizations (Incas, Mayas, Aztecs)
6. Architecture Crete and Mycenae
7. Greece - general characteristics, columns, temples
8. Greece - cities, Acropolis of Athens
9. Etruscan architecture
10. Rome - building structures, cities
11. Rome - public buildings and residential homes
12. Architecture of Late Antiquity
13. Byzantine architecture
14. Pre-Romanesque - early Middle Ages and early Croatian arhitecture
15. Romanesque - style characteristics, types of buildings
16. Examples of Romanesque buildings in Europe
17. Gothic - general characteristics, analysis Gothic cathedral
18. Examples of Gothic buildings in Europe
19. Renaissance - general characteristics, architecture of the 15th century
20. Renaissance - architecture of the 16th century, palaces and villas, cities; Mannerism
21. Baroque - style features, characteristic architecture and examples in Europe
22. Renaissance and Baroque in Croatia
23. Architecture at the turn of 18/19. century (Rococo, Classicism)
24. Historicism and architecture of the 19th century ; great world exhibition
25. Architecture of the 19th century in Croatia
26. Secession
27. Beginnings of modern architecture 20th century
28. Construction of the first half of the 20th century, Major builders and movements
29. Croatian modern architecture
30. Construction of the other half of the 20th century and current trends
REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:
Students are required to attend classes regularly and independently complete a seminar during the semester. The seminar work presented in front of colleagues.
GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS:
A positive evaluation seminar and presentation carries 40% of the final grade. Final oral exam carries 60% of the final grade.
