Description:
Lectures 1-3: Bosonic string theory. Polyakov and Nambu-Goto action. Corresponding classical symmetries: dimeomorphism and Weyl invariance. Gauge fixing. Conformal invariance. Classical solutions and constraints. Open and closed strings. Neumann and Dirichlet boundary conditions.
Lectures 4-6: Old covariant quantization. Fock space. Quantum constraints: Virasoro algebra and physical conditions. Open string spectra and physical interpretation: gauge theories. Closed string spectra: gravity. Simple amplitudes in bosonic string theory.
Lectures 7-10: Short review of conformal field theory. Energy momentum density tensor. State-operator correspondence. Primary fields, Operator product expansion. Corelators. Trace anomaly and critical dimension.
Lectures 11-14: Light cone quantization. BRST quantization. Fadeev-Popov path integral. Ghosts. BRST invariance. BRST operator.
Lectures 15-17: Simple amplitudes in bosonic string theory and low energy effective action.
Lectures 18-20: Superstring theory. RNS formalism. World sheet supersymmetry. Energy momentum tensor and supercurrent. R and NS sectors in open string theory. RR, NNSR sector in closed superstring theory. Spectrum of open and closed strings. GSO RR, NSNS, RNS and NSR sectors in closed superstrings. GSO projection and spacetime supersymmetry, Theories of type I, IIA and IIB. Physical intrepretation. Spacetime anomalies.
Lectures 21-22: BRST superstrings quantization. Comuting ghosts. BRST invariance. Bosonisation. Pictures and transition operators between pictures. Simple amplitudes in superstring theory.
Lectures 23-25: Heterotic superstring theory. Construction and spectra. Two possibilities: E8xE8 and SO(32).
Lectures 26-27: T duality in bosonic string theory. D branes and gauge theories. DBI effective actions.
Lectures 28-30: Low energy effective actions in superstring theory. S duality. M-theory.
