Description:
Laser light with different characteristics (color, power, duration of the laser emission) is used in modern medicine as diagnostic, therapeutic and surgical tools. The way in which different lasers interact with various components of biological tissues is the key to understanding the use of lasers in medicine. This course will therefore be devoted to the basis of light-tissue interaction which includes the description of the physical principles of absorption and scattering and its application to the description of the interaction of light and tissue, and transport of light through tissue.
Topic of the course include: 1. The emission and absorption of electromagnetic radiation; 2. Basic physical principles of laser operation; 3. Description of the different laser systems; 4. Optical resonators; 5. Lighttissue interaction I (reflection, absorption, scattering, refraction); 6. Light-tissue interaction II (photochemical interaction - heating, photoablation, photo-destruction); 7. Examples of laser applications in medicine; 8. Safety of work with lasers.
