The course introduces, through a series of guided steps, the GIS analysis of environmental change/land use patterns (LULC) and the shaping of the cultural landscape over an extended period of about 2 centuries. This necessarily involves different types of sources and their comparative use in the analysis, learning and mastering the methodology and techniques of using old cartographic and especially cadastral sources of Venetian and Austrian provenance in a GIS setting. Each of the historical surveys has a different methodology and provides a different range of data that can be used for LULC and cultural landscape analysis as well as for the analysis of changes in different environmental risks. Consequently, both data preparation and transfer to the GIS environment are specific and require knowledge of the sources, their specificities, and the methodology and preparation techniques for the GIS analysis.
