Description:

COURSE GOALS: Introduction to basic laboratory equipment, reagents, techniques and safety measures. Acquiring the skills of experimentation, observation, measurement and interpretation of results.
LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:
1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING

1. Properly handle laboratory equipment.
2. Apply safety rules at work.
3. Acquire basic techniques of laboratory work.
4. Use theoretical knowledge in the experimental work.
5. Develop the power of observation and exact recording of experimental data.
6. Scientifically correct interpretation of results of the measurements.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
1.-2. Halogen elements (obtaining and properties of chlorine, potassium chlorate and hydrogen chloride)
3.-4. Chalcogens elements (obtaining and properties of oxygen, the properties of elemental sulfur, preparation and properties of sulfur(IV) oxide)
5.-6. The elements nitrogen groups (obtaining and properties of ammonia, nitrogen(I) oxide, nitrogen(II) oxide, nitrogen(IV) oxide)
7.-8. Transition elements (preparation of chromium alum or iron(II) sulfate heptahydrate, tetraamminecopper(II) sulfate monohydrate
9.-10. Chemical kinetics (dependence of the rate of chemical reaction on temperature, concentration and catalyst)
11. Equilibrium of chemical reactions (hydrolysis, solubility product)
12.-13. Electrolysis and galvanic cell (relative strength of oxidizing and reducing agents, preparing galvanic cell, electrolysis process with soluble and insoluble anode, Faraday's laws of electrolysis)
14.-15. Given experiment (Ion exchange or recoupment)
REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS:
Colloquium before each exercise, the successful performed of laboratory exercises, writing reports.
GRADING AND ASSESSING THE WORK OF STUDENTS:
During the teaching process the teacher (assistant) continually assess student's achievements and progress. The final score includes success in preparing laboratory exercises, the success achieved on individual tests, reports. The final exam if necessary.
