LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Apply the fundamental sampling methods for vertebrates (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals).
2. Apply the proper manner of handling and keeping wild animals (housing, feeding, protection from stress during transport).
3. Analyse the flora and fauna of Učka Nature Park; list the biogeographical characteristics of the broader area of Učka Nature Park.
4. Describe the vertebrate community of the Butoniga reservoir, and analyse the methods of biomanipulation aimed at reducing the trophic level of the lake.
5. List and explain the methods of conditioning aboveground watercourses in the purification system of the Butoniga reservoir.
6. Describe the floral and fauna community of the Motovun Forest and the broader Mirna River basin, and explain the biogeographical characteristics of that area.
7. Explain the biogeographic significance of the Lim Channel. List and explain the objectives of mariculture. Learn the main factors of manipulating the lifecycle of farmed species.
8. List and explain the manner of sampling marine organisms and learn the typical representatives of the fauna of the Adriatic Sea.
In the field, students learn how to apply relevant methods for:
1. Sampling fish
2. Finding and sampling amphibians and reptiles
3. Catching, ringing and watching birds
4. Familiarisation with the use of determination keys for vertebrates
5. Acoustic determination of birds
6. Sampling methods for small mammals, and monitoring bats.
The field class is held throughout the Istrian Peninsula. Students are divided into smaller groups, and independently conduct research tasks and attain skills that will be applicable in creating independent research, collecting samples, processing samples, processing and interpretation of results and writing up the results. The field class includes visits to particularly interesting areas in terms of biogeography and students learn about the mechanisms of their management. As part of the field class, students visit the Marine Research Centre of the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Rovinj, and the Cromaris Fish Farm in the Lim Channel.
