Learning outcomes:
1. To learn how to collect and prepare plants for collection
2. To understand principles of plant naming
3. To understand basic nomenclature rules
4. To understand problematic of taxonomic systems
5. To understand different concepts of species
6. To learn how to use identification keys
7. To learn how to recognize the most common plant families in Croatia
8. To learn terminology and techniques used in plant identification

Course content

Lectures:
1. Botanical collections - herbarium techniques
2. Botanical collections - herbarium collections and data bases
3. History of botanical nomenclature
4. Plant nomenclature and ICN (International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants)
5. Name of taxon - structure and obligate parts
6. Name of taxon - etymology and name formation
7. Higher taxonomic units - concepts, definitions and nomenclature
8. Alternative nomenclature systems (UBN, DraftBioCode, PhyloCode)
9. Species - historical development of the species concept
10. Species - plant species and definition probems
11. Phylogenetic classification
12. Identification keys - concept and possible structures of keys and other identification literature
13. Identification terminology - morphological and anatomical terms used in plant identification
14. Identification characters of certain plant groups
15. Comparative overview of most common plant families in Croatia
