Description:
The main goal of the course is to improve students' knowledge and competencies in the field of application of scientific data in effective management of natural resources. The specific objectives of the course are aimed at acquiring knowledge about the types of multiple stressors, and understanding the mechanisms of their action in different freshwater ecosystems. In addition, the course provides an overview of existing research and methods that allow understanding and predicting the interactive effects of stressors at different levels of biological organization. Furthermore, an overview of new methods and approaches (e.g. omics methods, DNA methods, use of social media, etc.) is given, as well as the possibilities of applying them in the biological monitoring of freshwater communities. It explains the main challenges in the practical management of freshwater ecosystems under the influence of multiple stressors, and provides an overview of the existing tools used for this purpose.

Course overview
Multiple stressors definition and basic terms
(Overview of the most important stressors in the freshwater environment and riparian zone according to their frequency; Introduction to the geography of multiple stressors)
Climate change and interactions with multiple stressors in freshwater ecosystems
Assessment and monitoring of the impact of stressors in ecosystems - biological monitoring
Understanding and predicting the interactive effects of stressors at different levels of biological organization
Biological monitoring of freshwater communities in the 21st century
Target and non-target analyses, suspect screening in the analysis of environmental samples, Metabolomics
Citizen science in monitoring
Changes in land cover related to agriculture and the impact on water resources
Management of freshwater ecosystems under the influence of multiple stressors
Overview of existing tools developed with the goal of developing successful management of freshwater ecosystems under the influence of multiple stressors

Seminars follow lectures, and will be discussed in detail depending on the number of enrolled students and their personal interests.
