Description:
The aim of this course is to enhance comprehension of ecotoxicological terms and processes and to familiarize the students with suitable example studies which can be applied in the school teaching process to raise interest, awareness and understanding.
1. -2. Basic ecotoxicological terms and historical overview
3. Main groups of chemical pollutants in the environment and their sources.
4. Physical pollution (light, thermal, radioactive): main environmental sources and their effect on the ecosystems
5. Biological pollution. invasive species.
6. Input and distribution of toxicants in organisms and environment.
7. Specific aspects of marine, freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems pollution.
8. Effects of pollution across different levels of biological organisation
9. -10. Methods of choice to detect pollution impact in environment. Principles of biomonitoring.
11.-12. Adaptation and acclimatization. The effects of pollution on biodiversity. bioindicator species. Consequences of pollution on the level of ecosystem functioning.
13. -14. Pollution related. global threats. Examples of ecotoxicological catastrophes.
15. Pollution prevention and remediation.
All course topics will be elaborated in the context of Biology teaching processes.
