Lana Slavuj Borčić was born in 1981 in Rijeka, where she completed primary and secondary school. She enrolled in the study of geography at the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb in 2001, and graduated with top marks in 2007 with the final paper “Evaluation and revitalisation of Rijeka’s industrial heritage” under the mentorship of Professor Laura Šakaja).
In 2007, she enrolled in graduate studies at the Department of Geography and has been employed at the department since March 2008. She received her Doctorate in 2011 with the dissertation “Quality of life in an urban environment – example of the City of Rijeka” under the same mentor. She was made a senior research assistant in 2011, and appointed a scientific associate in 2013. Since 2017, she has held the post of assistant professor.
She has cooperated on a number of scientific projects. Her research interest to date has been primarily focused on topics in the areas of urban and cultural geography. A significant portion of her publications are dedicated to the quality of life in urban areas, focusing on the issues of urban gardens and urban agriculture, alternative food networks and the development of local food systems and shared urban resources. She focuses on analysis to better understand the different aspects that contribute to the life of residents in both urban and rural areas. She has also tackled topics such as the development of problematic city areas, and the symbolic changes of space through the transformation of street names, under the influence of shifts in ideology.
She has published 18 scientific papers and participated in 12 international and domestic scientific conferences. She has independently or jointly published scientific papers in influential international journals: Social and Cultural Geography (Q1), Geoforum (Q1) and Journal of Rural Studies (Q1). She has peer-reviewed scientific papers in domestic and foreign scientific journals.
At the Department of Geography, she teaches the courses Research methods in social geography, Introduction to research work, Croatian islands – sociogeographic topics. She holds seminars in the courses Cultural geography and The Mediterranean. She participates in holding two methodology courses in the Doctoral study of Geography: Space, Region, Environment, Landscape.
She is a member of the Croatian Geographic Society and the editorial board of the expert and information journal Geografski horizont.
