Danijel Orešić was born on 3 June 1966 in Zagreb, where he completed primary and secondary school. He graduated in geography from the Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb in 1989, and then enrolled in the spatial planning postgraduate programme at the same faculty, and received his Master’s degree in 1994, and then his Doctorate in 2000 with the dissertation entitled “Hydrographic characteristics and development of Krapina-Zagorje County”. Since 1990, he has been employed at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb. In 2001, he was appointed an assistant professor, in 2011 an associate professor, and in 2020 a full professor.
His scientific research interests are focused on the field of physical geography, primarily hydrogeography. He participated in two scientific projects of the Ministry of Science and Education, and on many expert projects. He was editor-in-chief of the scientific journal of the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb Acta Geographica Croatica and was or is a member of the editorial board of the scientific journals: Acta Geographica Croatica, Hrvatski geografski glasnik, Geoadria, Zbornik radova and Acta geographica Bosniae et Herzegovinae.
He was head of the Committee for implementation of the Bologna Process at the Department of Geography, and participated in the creation of new study programmes. He improved two courses and established seven new courses in the undergraduate and graduate study programmes of geography, and two courses in the doctoral study programme. He was a guest lecturer at the Faculty of Science and Education, University of Mostar, the Higher Teacher’s College in Petrinja, and the Teacher’s College, University of Zagreb.
He is a member of many domestic and foreign professional associations. He served as secretary in the Croatian Geographic Society, and as Vice-president and President for several mandates. He was a member of the National Committee of Geographers in the International Geographic Union (IGU). He is a member of the IGU Commission for Water Sustainability.
He is author of dozens of expert and professional/popular papers, and co-author of dozens of primary school textbooks in geography with accompanying workbooks in both Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. He has cooperated as author and editor in the writing of encyclopaedias, cartographic and statistical volumes.
