Vuk Tvrtko Opačić was born in Zagreb on 9 February 1976. After completing the Classical Gymnasium secondary school, in 1994 he enrolled in the study of geography at the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, University of Zagreb, and graduated in 1999. In 2000, he enrolled in postgraduate studies at the same faculty, and has been employed at the Division of Social Geography since 2001. He received his Doctorate in 2008 with the dissertation “Second homes in the littoral Croatia - a geographical perspective” under the supervision of Professor Zoran Curić. In 2009, he was named an Assistant Professor, in 2014 an Associate Professor and in 2020 a Full Professor.
He has led and cooperated on many domestic and international scientific and expert projects, primarily involving the topics of tourism geography, which is his primary scientific and teaching interest. To date, he has researched the geographic aspects of second homes and the tourism and recreational evaluation of urban green areas, protected areas and natural and tangible and intangible cultural heritage, types of tourism destinations, tourism development of spatial units, tourism in regional and local development, attraction basis of (alternative) forms of tourism, spatial aspects of tourism relations and demographic trends, and tourism and transport connections of peripheral areas.
He has published a total of 44 scientific papers, of which 30 papers in scientific journals, 9 papers in peer-reviewed proceedings of the scientific conferences and 5 chapters in scientific books. He is the author of the scientific book Opačić, V. T. (2012): Vikendaštvo u hrvatskom priobalju: jučer, danas, sutra [Second Home Phenomenon in the Croatian Littoral: Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow] (Hrvatska sveučilišna naklada, Zagreb), and a chapter Geografija Hrvatske [Geography of Croatia] in the university textbook Hrvatska na prvi pogled: udžbenik hrvatske culture [Croatia at First Sight: Textbook of Croatian Culture] (FF press, Zagreb, 2014; 2016; 2017). He is the co-author of the university textbook Curić, Z., Glamuzina, N., Opačić, V. T. (2013): Geografija turizma – regionalni pregled [Geography of Tourism – Regional Overview] (Naklada Ljevak, Zagreb). He is the co-editor of the scientific book Koderman, M., Opačić, V. T. (eds.) (2020): Challenges of tourism development in protected areas of Croatia and Slovenia (Založba Univerze na Primorskem i Hrvatsko geografsko društvo, Koper – Zagreb). He has submitted abstracts to 38 scientific conferences (29 international and 9 domestic), and participated in 2 scientific conferences (1 international and 1 domestic) as an invited lecturer. As an invited lecturer, he has participated also in 2 professional conferences (1 international and 1 domestic). He peer-reviewed 1 scientific book and 50 scientific papers in international and domestic scientific journals and proceedings of international and domestic scientific conferences. From 2015 to 2022, he was the editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Hrvatski geografski glasnik/Croatian Geographical Bulletin and from 2022 he is a member of the international editorial board of the same journal.
At the Department of Geography, Faculty of Science, he teaches the courses: Introduction to geography, Tourism geography, Tourism geography of Croatia, Tourism valorisation of heritage, and Geographical aspects of recreation. He is the leader of the field course, and co-lecturer in three methodology courses in the Doctoral study of Geography: Space, Region, Environment, Landscape. He has supervised or co-supervised 3 doctoral dissertations, 1 master’s thesis, 65 graduate and 28 baccalaureate final theses. One of the student papers he supervised received the Rector’s Award of the University of Zagreb. He is currently supervising 4 doctoral candidates.
From 2009 to 2020, he was the Head of the branch Heritage and Tourism in the graduate university research study programme Geography. From academic year 2019/2020 to academic year 2022/2023 he was the Head of the Division of Social Geography at the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Science, and from academic year 2021/2022 the alternate Member of the Natural Science Council of the University of Zagreb.
He is a member of the Croatian Geographic Society, and the Commission on the Geography of Tourism, Leisure and Global Change of the International Geographic Union (IGU). Since 2020, he is a member of the Steering Committee of the Commission on the Geography of Tourism, Leisure and Global Change at the International Geographical Union (IGU).
