Description:
Learning outcomes:

To improve knowledge in microbiology, acquired at the undergraduate study level, by focusing on attractive topics in virology, bacteriology, as well as biology of archaea, and subviral agents.
To strengthen skills in molecular biology using viral, bacterial and archaeal practising models.
To foster interactive learning by recruiting students for recent and attractive topics in microbiology.
To develop students' skills in searching for scientific information and extracting the most important facts by preparing their own presentations, as well as short assays.

The course content:

1. SARS-CoV-2 - biological characteristics of the virus, COVID-19 disease
2. Pathogenic bacteria - overview on the well-known bacterial pathogens, bacterial toxins, antibiotics, resistance
3. Phage therapy - application of bacterial viruses in bacterial infections treatment
4. Human microbiota - human microbiome project, how bacteria contribute to human well-being
5. Viruses as ecological and evolutionary factors - marine viruses, transduction, giant viruses, viral origin of DNA
6. Role of bacteria in eukaryote evolution - endosymbiotic emergence of chloroplasts and mitochondria
7. Virus vaccines - historical overview, recent and future perspective
8. Small non-coding RNAs - sat RNAs and viroids - disease agent and molecular models, pre-cellular RNA-world
9. Prions - the two origins of prion diseases: mutations and infections
10. Bacteria, viruses and their enzymes - molecular tools in biology, medicine, and biotechnology
11. Segmented-genome viruses - adjustment to eukaryote molecular mechanisms, recombination-potential
12. Escherichia coli - "the first lady of molecular biology"
13. Viruses as Nobel Prize winners - famous viral models in legendary scientific discoveries
14. Bioterrorism - bacteria and viruses as potential weapons
15. Archaea - both extremophiles and ubiquitous organisms, molecular comparison with bacteria and eukarya
