* Load is given in academic hour (1 academic hour = 45 minutes)
Description:
COURSE GOALS: The goal is to familiarize students with state-of-the art astrophysical results, stressing the topic of active galactic nuclei (AGN). Students are expected to relate the theoretical background about AGN with contemporary ideas in modern cosmology about the role of AGN in formation and evolution of galaxies, and thereby engage in scientific research in modern observational cosmology.
LEARNING OUTCOMES AT THE LEVEL OF THE PROGRAMME:
1. KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
demonstrate the latest scientific researches in the area of student's specialization
2. APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
develop a way of thinking that allows the student to set the model or to recognize and use the existing models in the search for solutions to specific physical and analog problems
apply standard methods and corresponding numerical methods when solving physics problems
independently carry out numerical calculations on a personal computer including the development of simple programs
3. MAKING JUDGEMENTS
develop a sense of personal responsibility through selection of the selective mandatory courses offered in the curriculum
4. COMMUNICATION SKILLS
acquire the skills needed to adapt the presentation of his/her research results to experts in the field as well as to broader public
use English as the language of communication in the profession, the use of literature, and writing scientific papers and articles
5. LEARNING SKILLS
consult professional literature independently as well as other relevant sources of information, which implies a good knowledge of English as a language of professional communication
engage in scientific work and research within the framework of postgraduate doctoral studies

LEARNING OUTCOMES SPECIFIC FOR THE COURSE:
Upon passing the course, the student will be able to:
- Classify AGN
- Explain the massive black hole paradigm
- Describe the continuum emission from AGN, their broad and narrow emission line regions
- Describe the quasar luminosity function and its evolution through cosmic time
- Describe and understand the unified model for AGN
